By the Sea Seraya
Our Story

Program By the Sea Seraya was founded by Wayan Berata in 2009. Our foundation (Yayasan Seraya Bundar) is a non-profit organization that provides educational opportunities to children in the Seraya community. Wayan is the heart and soul of the Yayasan.
As the founder and manager of this non-profit organization, he has dedicated himself to providing educational opportunities for children in Seraya. Wayan’s vision and leadership have been instrumental in establishing a safe, welcoming environment where children can learn English and build essential skills for their future.
With a deep commitment to his community, Wayan works closely with volunteers to ensure everyone feels supported and inspired. He’s always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and share insights about local culture and traditions. Wayan’s passion for education and community development is contagious, and he looks forward to welcoming you to Seraya
Background
Seraya, a small coastal village in Bali, is home to a vibrant yet underserved community where access to quality education is limited. English proficiency is increasingly essential for students and locals to access better job opportunities, especially in the tourism and hospitality sectors, which are vital to the region’s economy.
By the Sea, Seraya was established to bridge this gap by providing free English lessons to children and young adults. With tourism as a key industry, English proficiency opens doors to better job opportunities.
Where Will I Be Volunteering?
Yayasan Seraya Bundar was founded by Wayan Berata in 2009, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to children in the Seraya community. As an after-school program, we aim to offer children of all ages and skill levels a safe and inspiring place to learn English and gain essential skills for the future.
Your Role
During your time here, you’ll give English classes, computer lessons, sports, or even music. Your time here will make a great difference in the children’s education and development. You will teach students at the Learning Center, grouped by age and English proficiency.
There are four groups with specific needs and goals, requiring volunteers to adapt their approach to suit each group’s learning level and engagement style.
The Learning Center has three outdoor classrooms, a fully equipped computer room, a smaller classroom/library, a fully equipped sports field, an outdoor swimming pool, and plenty of open space for various activities with the children.
Typical Day
The lesson will start from 2 pm till 6 pm from Monday to Thursday. The teaching schedule is flexible and depends on the number of volunteers, school activities, and holidays.
In your free time at the Learning Center, you can join workshops such as Balinese language, Balinese dance, and cooking classes. If you can teach yoga, you are welcome to lead a session for the children after class. You can also enjoy activities like fishing, snorkeling, and hiking on weekends.
Accomodation
In the By the Sea Seraya program, there are seven comfortable guest rooms located at the Learning Center—two next to Mr. Wayan’s house and five with a sea view. A swimming pool offers a stunning view of the ocean.
You will stay with a Balinese family and experience daily life in the village. They serve home-cooked breakfast and lunch, with dinner as an optional add-on. A variety of dishes are available, including vegetarian options.
By staying in the Learning Center’s guest rooms and using its transport and tour services, you help support the center. These additional income sources enable the Learning Center to operate as a self-sufficient organization.

Meals
As part of your stay, we provide three meals per day to all volunteers. Meals are designed to keep you energized throughout the day and are prepared with local ingredients to give you a taste of Balinese culture.
Meal times are flexible to accommodate your teaching schedule, and you’re welcome to enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner in our shared dining area. We strive to make meals balanced and filling so you can fully enjoy your time working with the children.
If you have any dietary restrictions, please let us know so we can do our best to accommodate your needs.
